Tips about the unique nature reserve and for a day out
Waterdunen is a unique nature reserve and an icon for Zeeland. This nature reserve is living proof that, nowadays, Zeeland handles the water differently. Waterdunen is a Delta Work. But it differs from the Delta Works that we know as the enormous operation that protects Zeeland against the water. In the 350-hectare nature and recreation area, the tides are leading. The innovative tidal culvert (between the nature reserve and the Westerschelde) ensures that salty water flows in and out behind the dike. This has resulted in an inland salt water aqua culture. Waterdunen, with its mudflats, salt marshes, tidal flats and shallow water, is an important refuelling station for birds and a nursery for fish.
Dogs are welcome at the beach all year round (when leashed). Nature reserve Waterdunen is not accessible to dogs.
Molecaten Park Waterdunen is not far from the Belgian border. Ideal for making trips to the charming Belgian cities. Enjoy the romance and chocolate of Bruges, the sophisticated beach pavilions and shopping in Knokke and the numerous museums and historical monuments in Antwerp. Afterwards you can enjoy a delicious pint.
