Cycling
The 'farm route' is fun, with stops at farms along the way where you are shown around by the farmer or his wife. Hop on your bike and discover all the beauty in the area or cycle a culinary route of Foodregio WZVL!
Cycle route and junction maps are available from reception. Read more about the Fietsnetwerk Zeeland (FIKS). Choose a cycling tour outside the dike with a view of the water or a wind-free route close to the dike! The routes also take you past the villages and towns of Zeeland.
Lovely routes include:
No other route has as many creeks as the Cathalijneroute. In the beginning of the Middle Ages, however, this area was cut through by many more creeks. The coastline ran where nowadays Zeeuws-Vlaanderen borders Belgium. The land was diked in, but new creeks were created by flooding. After re-embankment, the creeks eventually largely disappeared. This route also offers many reminders of the Eighty Years' War: entrenchments, lines and a fortified town.
The border area of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Belgium is a region with wonderful names. What about Pyramide, Mollekot, Muizenhol (mouse hole) and - the namesake of this route - Maagd van Gent (Virgin of Ghent)? This maagd (virgin) was a pub on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium and is now a hamlet, through which the national border runs. This cycle route has many charms: Biervliet and IJzendijke, old and new polders, and in Belgium, cobbled lanes and a tranquil waterway: the Leopold Canal.
